Tech softball downs Texas A&M-Corpus Christi, Stephen F. Austin

MOBILE, Ala. – Saturday was a good day for the Tennessee Tech softball team at the South Alabama Invitational as the Golden Eagles took two victories, beating Texas A&M-Corpus Christi 4-3 in the day's first game, then a 3-2 victory over Stephen F. Austin.

Tech (4-9) concludes its play in the tournament on Sunday as the Golden Eagles face Stephen F. Austin again at 12:30 p.m.

In the first game, Leigh Ellen Thomas earned the win in relief, throwing 4 1/3 scoreless innings as she yielded five hits and struck out three. Starter Taylor Waldrop allowed three runs – one earned – on five hits in the first 2 2/3 frames, walking one and striking out one.

TAM-CC scored a run in the bottom of the first, but the Golden Eagles scored two runs in the top of the third when Hallie Davis hit a double into left center, sending Demi Coleman and Aalia Bivens home to score.

Corpus Christi scored two runs in the bottom of the third to retake the lead, but Tech reclaimed the advantage with two runs in the top of the sixth. Davis scored on a sacrifice bunt from Ashley McGowan, then Amity Brown scored as Bayli Cruse hit a grounder to short and an errant throw allowed her to reach.

In the second game, Davis hit her fourth home run of the season, while Callen Griffin hit her first of the year. Tech scored single runs in the fifth, sixth and seventh innings.

Griffin hit a one-out homer to right in the fifth, Davis hit a leadoff home run to left in the sixth, then Aalia Bivens hit a bunt single back to the circle, driving in Griffin.

Danielle Liberatore went the distance in picking up her second win of the year, throwing 161 pitches as she allowed two runs on 10 hits, walking three and striking out 13.
