IUPUI hits walk-off HR in 7th to top Tech softball

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. – The Tennessee Tech softball team took a tough loss on Sunday to wrap up their play in the Chattanooga Challenge sponsored by Ruby Falls on Sunday.

Facing IUPUI in the single-game finale, the Golden Eagles found themselves tied with the Jaguars at three runs apiece. But in the bottom of the seventh, Maggie Armstrong ended the contest, hitting a two-run walk-off home run to give IUPUI the 5-3 victory.

Kelly Kennedy and Ashley McGowan each led Tech with two hits each, including a home run for the senior Kennedy.

Tech (1-8) outhit the Jaguars 7-6 in the game, but left eight runners on to IUPUI's one.

Taylor Waldrop worked the first 4 2/3 innings, allowing two runs on four hits as she struck out one. Leigh Ellen Thomas came on in relief, throwing the final three outs as she yielded three runs – two earned – on two hits

Nickole Finch earned the win as she allowed three runs – one earned – on seven hits. She walked three and struck out eight.

Taylor Chitwood and Maggie Armstrong each drove in two runs for the Jaguars.

Tech scored two runs in the top of the first as Jessie Lowery scored on Hallie Davis' bunt single, then Davis went home on a bases-loaded walk to McGowan.

IUPUI tied the game at two in the bottom of the fourth, then Tech retook a 3-2 lead in the top of the fifth with Kennedy's homer.

The Jaguars retied the game in the sixth, then ended it with the walk-off homer in the seventh.

The Golden Eagles return to action on Friday as they travel to the South Alabama Invitational. Tech will take on Texas A&M-Corpus Christi and South Alabama on Friday.
