COOKEVILLE, Tenn. – In the spring's first edition of conference weekly honors, Tennessee Tech tennis struck gold as junior Marcos Bernardes was named the adidas® OVC Tennis Male Athlete of the Week. The Brasilia, Brazil native was perfect in Tech's lone match of the week, a 6-1 win at UNC Asheville on Feb. 11.
Bernardes captured his singles bout, 6-3, 6-1, over Josh Swindler in the No. 2 spot, while also teaming up with Guillermo Nicolas to seize the No. 2 doubles match against the Bulldogs with a 6-3 nod over James Massie and Majed Yousif. The win put the Golden Eagles above .500 with Tech now sitting at 3-2, and also snapped a four-match slide against UNC Asheville in the all-time series.
Overall, Bernardes possesses TTU's best doubles mark with a 3-0 record in the spring, posting an even 2-2 singles record as well. The 5-foot-9 junior just took home the No. 8 spot in the OVC's Top 10 preseason player rankings, which were announced earlier this week.
The Golden Eagles flock to Florida this weekend for a busy stretch that will see Tech play three matches in three days. TTU will be at UCF Friday and FGCU Saturday, before closing out its stay in the Sunshine State with a Sunday neutral site meeting against Charlotte in Fort Myers.
