COOKEVILLE, Tenn. – Tennessee Tech junior third baseman Trevor Putzig earned a place on the CoSIDA Academic All-America® Division I Baseball Second Team Friday, the first Golden Eagle baseball player honored at the highest level since 2008.
Putzig leads the Golden Eagles this season in batting and hits, ranking 10th nationally with a .395 average and 11th with 88 base knocks. In 53 games this season, the slugger boasts 22 doubles and six home runs. He has driven in 51 runs and scored 55 times as well.
A fierce competitor on the diamond, Putzig has proven to be a consistent worker in the classroom his entire career, earning a place on the Athletic Director's Honor Roll in each of his five semesters at Tech and has also been named to the OVC Commissioner's Honor Roll twice in two years.
Known for his relentless effort on defense and highlight-reel plays, as well as the ability to put the ball in play, the Louisville, Ky. native has put together a 3.75 GPA in business management.
Putzig raises the number of Golden Eagle student-athletes named to CoSIDA Academic All-American® teams since 1976 to 38. He becomes the fourth Tech baseball player to earn the honor, and the first since Thomas Nelson in 2008.
He also represents Tech's first Academic All-America® selection since former Tech men's basketball player, Dennis Ogbe, in 2014.
The CoSIDA Academic All-America® and Academic All-District® is organized and voted on by the College Sports Information Directors of America.
Putzig is one of just three players from the Ohio Valley Conference to earn Academic All-America honors. Eastern Kentucky's Ben Fisher was named the 2017 CoSIDA Academic All-American® of the Year for Division I baseball while Belmont's Nick Egli took home a place on the First Team.
The Golden Eagles, along with Putzig, will kick off NCAA Regional action in Tallahassee Friday evening, taking on No. 15 Florida State at 5 p.m. CT on ESPN3 and FM 106.1 The Eagle.
