COOKEVILLE, Tenn. -- Registration is now open for golfers
interested in playing in the 2014 Pepsi Bobby Nichols
Scramble presented by Budweiser. Golfers who register
early will get the first choice of tee times and courses for play
on Friday and Saturday. Registration is available online, on the
phone or in person at the Eblen Center ticket office.
The field of 512 is expected to be completely filled for the
tournament, so participants are encouraged to register as soon as
possible. Over the past 34 years, the tournament has grown into one
of the largest and most popular golf tournaments in the
Southeast.
The Bobby Nichols Scramble, a major fund raising event for
Tennessee Tech Athletics, will be June 6-8 at three area golf
courses. The two-person scramble features 18 holes each day, with a
championship flight and 17 additional flights determinted for
Sunday's final round.
The tournament will be held at Ironwood Golf Course, Cookeville
Golf Club and White Plains Golf Club.
"All indications are that this year's field will be completely
full," said Leveda Dexter, tournament co-director. "We are
encouraging golfers who are interested in playing to call or go
online as soon as possible to ensure they get a space. The earlier
you register, the more choices you'll have in tee times and course
selection.
"Each course can only handle a limited number of teams each day,
so having a choice of courses and times is the best reason to not
delay," she said.
To register for the tournament, or for additional information,
visit the Athletics Ticket Office in Eblen Center or call (931)
372-3941. To register online, click here.
"This three-day tournament is not only an exciting and enjoyable
event, it is also an important fundraising event for the Tennessee
Tech Athletics Department," said Mark Wilson, TTU Director of
Athletics. "The primary purpose is to generate revenue for the
athletic teams and student-athletes, while providing three great
days of golf and fellowship."
"The Scramble has been an absolutely fantastic time," said Watson
Brown, Tech's head football coach. "As a fundraising tournament, it
is vital to the success of Tech athletics."
Pepsi returns as the title sponsor for the 10th year with
Budweiser in the ninth year as the presenting sponsor.
Tournament applications are being mailed to all past participants,
former Tennessee Tech athletes and alumni across Tennessee. Golfers
may also register online at TTUsports.com or by contacting the
Eblen Center ticket office at (931) 372-3941.
One of the region's premier amateur tournaments for more than
three decades, this year's scramble will continue to feature a
competitive format.
With early registration, golfers will have the opportunity to
choose -- until a limit is reached at each course -- which courses
they will play for Friday's and Saturday's rounds along with their
preference of tee times for those days. All teams will be placed in
flights Saturday evening to determine which course they will play
during the final round Sunday.
The Championship Flight will play at White Plains Golf Course on
Friday, Ironwood Golf Course on Saturday and Cookeville Golf Club
on Sunday. Participants in the Championship Flight must declare for
the championship.
"The Championship Flight is the most prestigious two-man scramble
championship in the South," said Dexter.
"Early registration benefits the golfers since they get to choose
their courses and they get to play their practice rounds as soon as
they register," she added.
The competing golfers can take advantage of three practice rounds
– one at each of the three courses - anytime after they have
paid their registration in full for the tournament.
"This tournament is extremely popular among the golfers who
participate, and each year we've tried to find ways to make
improvements," Dexter said. "Part of the reason for its popularity
is the variety of activities in addition to the actual golf
competition."
In addition to the three days of golf and three practice rounds,
participants will also receive a ticket to Doc Fields' Friday night
golf party/concert, and the Cumberland Insurance BBQ on Saturday
night, a chance at hole-in-one prizes and a chance at a million
dollar shot. The entry fee also includes golf carts each day during
the tournament and a gift for each competing golfer.
The Friday night concert is sponsored by Dr. Gail Fields of
Blackfoot, Idaho along with presenting sponsor Budweiser. The event
includes free food and beverages, with a limited number of
additional tickets available for sale to golfers and tournament
sponsors.
Saturday night's highlight is the Barbecue Dinner, sponsored by
Cumberland Insurance Group of Cookeville.
"We've been able to take feedback from participants over the past
several years and use it to continue improving the tournament, and
we hope to make the entire tournament an even more enjoyable
event," Dexter said. "That goes for the players, the volunteers who
help run the event, the many generous sponsors, and the people who
participate without playing, such as attending the Friday night
concert or the Saturday night barbeque."
The Pepsi Bobby Nichols Golden Eagle Scramble, presented by
Budweiser, will feature major hole-in-one prizes plus prizes for
longest drive and closest to the pin contests. Gift certificates
for winners in 18 flights will be returned to the golfers finishing
highest in their flights.
