Shawn Monday, an All-American who helped the Golden Eagles win OVC Tournament championships three times and all three years captured first-round victories in NCAA Tournament play, proved to be a pivotal portion of the women’s basketball program between 1987 and 1990.

Monday was a four-year starter, three-time team captain and two-time all-OVC pick at point guard for the women’s basketball team during one of the most successful periods in the program’s history.

Monday played in 121 career games and shattered – by nearly 200 -- the school record for career assists with 822 for an average of 6.8 per game. A true point guard, she also ranks third all-time in career steals with 249.

In her four seasons, the Eagles won 91 games as they posted an incredible 91-30  overall record. The team was 44-8 against the Ohio Valley Conference.

In her freshman season, Monday was named to the OVC All-Freshman team and helped the Eagles capture the OVC regular season and tournament crowns under first-year head coach Bill Worrell. In NCAA first-round play in Eblen Center, Tech knocked off Southern Mississippi as Monday set the NCAA tournament school records with 10 assists and four steals. She finished the year with 225 assists, the second-highest single-season in school history and still the freshman class record. Tech was 24-7 overall and 12-2 in the OVC.

In her sophomore season, Monday set an NCAA record when she was credited with 22 assists in a road game at Morehead State, a mark that still stands in the TTU record book and still ranks as the second-best game in NCAA history. Her 178 total assists is currently the sophomore class record. The Eagles posted a 19-10 mark and 11-3 record in league play.

As a junior, Monday’s backcourt leadership led Tech to another OVC Tournament title, a 22-8 overall record and 8-3 OVC regular season mark. Once again, the Eagles claimed an NCAA Tournament first-round triumph when they stunned South Carolina, 77-73 in Columbia, before falling by two at the University of Iowa in the second round.

In her senior season, Monday and the Eagles rolled to a perfect 12-0 record against the OVC for the regular season championship. The Eagles were 26-5 overall.  In the NCAA Tournament, Tech bumped off Richmond, 77-59, for their third consecutive first-round victory with Monday pulling the trigger.

While Monday played her entire career before the creation of the Frank Porter Award, she did reap other team honors including the John. P. Hendrix Leadership Award in 1988-89 and the Best Defensive Player in 1986-87. In 1988, she was named All-America by the National Women’s Sports Federation. The league voted her all-OVC in 1988 and 1990.
