Gene Davidson and Eldon Burgess are names that have been synonymous with Tennessee Tech athletics since early in the 1960s when they first teamed up to broadcast Golden Eagle football and basketball games.

Eldon’s sports casting career began in the late 1950s as an engineer for the broadcasts of play-by-play announcer Raymond “Bull” Brown, and continued as the voice of Cookeville High School athletics.

Gene Davidson began working while an undergraduate at Tech in 1957, and upon graduation in 1959, he did tape-delayed broadcasts of Livingston Academy on WLIV radio. He returned to WHUB in 1961, and one year later initiated his long-time association as broadcaster of Tech athletics. While “Bull” Brown turned to coaching, Eldon continued as program engineer and also began providing color commentary alongside Gene.

Natives of the region, the pair worked their entire career after 1962 at WHUB and witnessed nearly every Tech football and basketball game for more than a quarter of a century. They traveled with Tech’s teams to more than 30 states and Canada, and – in addition to all the regular season action – broadcasted three football bowl games and more than a dozen NCAA, NIT, and WNIT basketball tournament games.

Eldon, who hailed from Bush Creek in Smith County, also spent time as a sales representative at WHUB and broadcasted Cookeville High School basketball and football games.

Gene, from Nameless in Jackson County, worked as news and sports director at WHUB.
