Hubie Smith Jr., the first recipient of the first golf scholarship offered by Tech, was instrumental in the early success of the Golden Eagle golf team, which captured OVC championships in two of his four seasons. He was second in individual scoring by a single stroke in 1951 as Tech claimed the league crown. His final season, 1956, saw Tech slip to third in the team standings and Smith also fell to third place, by two strokes this time.
