Shumaker starred on two OVC Championship teams during his career from 1957-59, winning All-American recognition in 1959. He earned All-OVC honors during the 1958-59 seasons. In 1959 he won the Robert Hill Johnson Award after serving as team captain. He set the career rushing record and had the longest play from scrimmage for any Golden Eagle.
