Rains played on the 1949 football squad, served two years with the army, and returned to Tech to earn letters in the 1952-54 seasons. He was the captain of Putty Overall's final team at Tech. He captained the 1953 OVC Champs, earned All-OVC honors in 1953 and 1954, and was named to a Little-All-American team his senior season.
