Tech women's basketball adds 6-1 C/F Newman from Gatlinburg-Pittman

COOKEVILLE, Tenn. – As a junior at Gatlinburg-Pittman, Maddy Newman put up some incredible numbers. Now, she'll look to continue that trend as she heads to Cookeville to join the Tennessee Tech women's basketball team.

Newman, a 6-1 center/forward, averaged 20.8 points per game last season, while also pulling down an average of 6.2 rebounds. Her shooting numbers were phenomenal, hitting 62.3 percent from the floor, 42.9 percent from beyond the arc and 73.4 percent at the free-throw line.

Gatlinburg-Pittman's nominee for the TSSAA Miss Basketball award, Newman earned all-district, all-region and all-state honors as the team won district and region titles. With still another year to go, she already has over 1,500 points and 500 rebounds in her career.
Under the direction of Katie Moore, Newman looks to lead another talented group of Lady Highlanders back to the TSSAA State Tournament for the third time in her career this season.

"Maddy Newman is just a winner!," Tech head coach Kim Rosamond said. "She has a high motor and never takes a place off. She is a fierce competitor that has played at a very high level during her high school career. Maddy is extremely versatile, can stretch the defense but also score around the basket. Her ability to run the floor, rebound, and relentless attitude will help Tennessee Tech basketball continue to compete for championships in the future."

Newman played travel basketball for the highly touted TN Flight Silver EYBL 17U.

She is also a three-sport athlete as she plays middle blocker for the volleyball team and goalkeeper for the soccer team.

"The coaches, players and staff at Tennessee Tech made me feel I belong in Cookeville from the second I stepped on campus!," Newman said. "I cannot wait to be part of this wonderful community."

The daughter of Ryan and Cassie Newman, she plans to enroll in exercise science with an emphasis in pre-physical therapy.
