Cassetty fires career-low 67 to lead Tech

Final round begins at 9 a.m. Tuesday

MURRAY, Ky. – Tyler Cassetty shot a career-low 67, finishing the first round of the MSU Invitational at four-under par on Monday at the host squad’s Miller Memorial Golf Course.

Cassetty, a senior from Whitleyville, Tenn., bested his previous career mark of 68, which he last shot at the Grover Page Classic in March.

He held a share of the tournament lead after the first round, but fell to fifth overall after shooting a second-round 73 Monday afternoon. Cassetty completed the first day of the event with a 67-73=140 and sits at -2 going into Tuesday morning’s final round.

As a team, Tennessee Tech finished the first two rounds tied for fifth place out of 14 participating schools, shooting a combined 286-298=584.

Mason Griffin led the Golden Eagles in the second round, shooting a team-low score of 72. Griffin was the second Tech finisher behind Cassetty, coming in at 75-72=147 and finishing in a tie for 23rd overall. Greg Kitts was the third Golden Eagle, posting a score of 71-78=149, while the Tech five was rounded out by Travis Ramsey with a 73-80=153 and Lee Maxwell with a 80-75=155.

Taylor Diegel and Maxx Verble played as individuals and shot 78-75-153 and 82-75=157 respectively.

Lipscomb goes into the final round carrying the lead after firing a 283-286=569 over the first two rounds. Host Murray State is three strokes back at 572 while Morehead State is six strokes back at 575. Belmont sits in fourth with a score of 580, and the Golden Eagles and Tennessee-Martin are locked in a tie for fifth at 584.

The rest of the field consists of Missouri Baptist (586), Tennessee State (590), Kentucky Wesleyan (592), Union University (594), UT Martin B (604), Lewis University (612), Murray State B (612), and Brescia (615).

The final round begins at 9 a.m. Tuesday morning. Miller Memorial is playing to a yardage of 6,592 and a par of 71.
