Johnson honored as adidas® OVC Freshman of the Week for third time

COOKEVILLE, Tenn. – As the saying goes, all good things come in threes. For Tennessee Tech men's basketball player Lanerryl Johnson, it couldn't be more true as the redshirt freshman picked up his third adidas® Ohio Valley Conference Freshman of the Year award.

The honor comes following a 10-point performance by Johnson at Southeast Missouri on Saturday. The point guard earned his second career start in the contest and made it count, shooting 50 percent from three-point range.

Johnson grabbed his first honor of the season on Dec. 17, when shared the award with Austin Peay's Chris Horton. That week marked the fifth straight week Horton took home at least a share of the honors.

On Jan. 7, the Atlanta, Ga. native took home his second award, following strong home performances against Belmont and Tennessee State. Johnson's latest honor marks the first time that a Tech player has taken home the award three times in one season since senior guard Jud Dillard did it in the 2009-10 campaign.

Receiving Player of the Week honors was Ian Clark of Belmont. The Newcomer of the Week award went to Sherman Blanford of Eastern Illinois and Corey Walden of Eastern Kentucky.

The Golden Eagles will return to the hardwood Thursday when the team hosts Murray State in a nationally televised contest set to tip off at 7 p.m. CST. The game, which will be televised by ESPNU marks the first nationally televised contest for Tech this season.
