Lanerryl Johnson wins his first OVC co-Freshman of the Week honor

Lanerryl Johnson wins his first OVC co-Freshman of the Week honor

COOKEVILLE, Tenn. – One of the primary reasons that Tennessee Tech has won six of its first 10 games this season is the solid play of redshirt freshman guard Lanerryl Johnson.

On Monday, Johnson was voted the Ohio Valley Conference co-Freshman of the Week after leading the Golden Eagles to a satisfying, 11-point road victory at Milwaukee on Saturday night.

The 6-1, 170-pound ballhandler from Atlanta, came off the bench to score 15 points, grab four rebounds, dish out three assists and net three steals as Tech improved to 6-4 with a 69-58 victory over the Panthers from the Horizon League.

Johnson scored eight of his 15 points after halftime as TTU built a four-point halftime lead back up to double digits. Johnson currently ranks third on the team in scoring, averaging 10.3 points per game.

Johnson is the only freshman listed in the Top 30 in the OVC in scoring. He also ranks 13th in the league in free throw percentage.

A Walton High School product, Johnson shared the honor with Austin Peay freshman center Chris Horton, who has won the award five consecutive weeks.  The other league honors went to Isaiah Canaan of Murray State and Robert Covington of Tennessee State as co-Players of the Week, and Corey Walden of Eastern Kentucky as Newcomer of the Week.

The Golden Eagles will play at Auburn Tuesday at 7 p.m., then visit No. 24 Oklahoma State Saturday at noon.
