COOKEVILLE, Tenn. -- Nick Madonia has already made some marks into the Tennessee Tech record book. Now he's trying to earn one of the highest honors for a collegiate kicker.

 

Madonia was named to the first watch list for the Fred Mitchell Award, which honors the most outstanding kicker in the Division I Football Championship Subdivision, Division II, Division III and NAIA levels.

 

The senior from Arrington, Tenn., currently has the three longest field goals this season on the FCS level, hitting a 54-yarder at FBS Utah State, 53-yarder at Jacksonville State and a 52-yarder against Southeast Missouri. He is the only FCS kicker with multiple 50-plus-yard field goals and has three of the 12 50-plus-yard field goals in the FCS this season. He is the only Division I player with three field goals in the top 25 distances so far this season.

 

In addition to the school-record 57-yard kick at Tennessee State in 2016, he has the top three field goals made in program history and five of the top seven.

 

Madonia also tied the school record for consecutive PATs, hitting his 59th in a row against Southeast Missouri to tie Zach Sharp (2011-2014). Madonia has not missed a PAT since the 2016 game at UT Martin on September 24.

 

This season, Madonia has hit 10 of his 13 field goal tries (76.9 percent) and has hit all 14 of his PATs for a team-high 44 points. He is a perfect 5-for-5 from 20-39 yards this season, 2-for-4 from 40-49 and 3-for-4 from 50-plus. 

 

For his career, Madonia has made 32 of his 43 field goals and 68 of his 70 PATs for 164 points. He is currently tied with Josh Foster for second place in the Tech record books for field goals made in a career, trailing David Collett, who made 49 from 1998 to 2001.

 

Tech travels to Tennessee State on Saturday, facing the Tigers at Nissan Stadium at 4:30 p.m.
