COOKEVILLE, Tenn. – Football coach Watson Brown and
his staff welcomed several dozen former Golden Eagle players back
to town Friday and Saturday for the annual Tennessee Tech Football
Alumni Golf Classic, held at Cookeville Golf Club. Players from
several decades of Tech football were on hand for the event, which
culminated in a barbecue dinner.
All proceeds from the tournament go to the Tennessee Tech football
program and the Robert Hill Johnson endowment.
The weekend was packed with reminiscing and sharing memories and
tall tales as head coach Watson Brown and his entire staff hosted a
field of 100 golfers. Alumni from multiple decades of Golden Eagle
history were on hand to for the outing. From the early
‘60’s squads, to the freshest of alum in the 2014
graduates, moments in Golden Eagle history were shared as the
weekend went on.
Prior to the golf outing on Saturday, participants enjoyed a
Friday night BBQ dinner. The dinner was sponsored by Miller Lite
and Stone Steel and featured some of the South's best barbecue for
what has become a legendary feast.
While Brown and his staff enjoyed seeing and visiting with the
former players, all lot of the work in coordinating the event was
handled by former players, headed by Tom Pemberton.
"It takes a lot of people to get this done, and it's all run by
the former players," Brown said. "We don't do this. We help them
and do all we can to help. This isn't our team or the athletic
department putting this on. Larry (Schreiber) started this many
years ago and they've given great money to a scholarship now that
we're getting really close on. This is truly neat because they run
the whole show. Tom Pemberton's in charge of it now after taking it
over for Larry. To see these guys put this all together, this is
what I really like about it."
"It's a great chance for former players to come back and meet with
the coaching staff, to gain a little insight into the 2013 season,
and to visit and reminisce about the past," Pemberton said. "The
most important aspect is that the tournament continues to grow and
raise money for the Robert Hill Johnson Scholarship Endowment and
for the TTU football program."
Sponsors of the event included Stone Steel, Pepsi, Cookeville Communications, IWC, Cravens Investments, Cumberland Insurance, John’s Place, Stroud’s Barbeque and MidSouth Distributing.
