Western Kentucky tops Golden Eagles in midweek match

BOWLING GREEN, Ky. – The Tennessee Tech volleyball team knew Western Kentucky would be hard to handle on Tuesday night, but seeing the high-flying Hilltoppers in person proved to be a challenge, as the Golden Eagles were topped, 3-0; 18-25, 7-25, 13-25.

"Western Kentucky is a very good squad who has been receiving votes this season to be ranked nationally and they brought it tonight," head coach Dave Zelenock said. "Playing a squad like this is a great experience for us to have."

WKU controlled the game, scoring 54 points and holding the Golden Eagles to -.050 hitting percentage. Western Kentucky put a clip of .265, and recorded 10 blocks. Jessica Lucas and Heather Boyan led the Hilltoppers with eight kills. Lucas hit an impressive .667, while not committing an error. She also dished out 23 assists, adding two aces and two blocks.

Tech's bright spot came from freshman Jordan Wachowiak. The 6-foot-3 middle blocker put away a team-high eight kills, and was the only Golden Eagle to hit in the positive with a remarkable clip of .538. She also added five blocks, including two solos.

"Jordan was very good tonight; she competed with Western's middles and was able to put the ball away," Zelenock said. "Jordan has always been a great defender, and I think tonight helped prove to her that she is also a great hitter."

Sophomore Sharon Anderson dished out 15 assists, while Courtney Smith dug up a game-high 14 digs.

The Golden Eagles open Ohio Valley Conference play this weekend with their first home matches of the season as they host Eastern Illinois on Friday in a 7 p.m. CT match, and then will host SIU Edwardsville on Saturday at 4 p.m.
