Golden Eagles top Colonels in OVC road match

RICHMOND, Ky. – The Tennessee Tech women's volleyball team has extended its win-streak to three matches following a Saturday afternoon win over host Eastern Kentucky. The Golden Eagles bested the Colonels in a marathon match, taking the match 3-2; 21-25, 26-24, 16-25, 25-20, 15-6.

The Golden Eagles (10-14, 5-3) showed heart and tenacity as they fought with the Colonels. In the set two and four wins, Tech tallied 30 digs in the second, while recording 22 in the fourth. These two defensive performances held EKU to .091 hitting in the second and .174 in the fourth.

In the deciding fifth set, Tech took efficiency to a whole new level as they hit an impressive .600, as they put down nine kills on 15 swings, with no errors. The Golden Eagles were a perfect six for six on the side out.

Freshman Kellie Williams led the way for the Golden Eagles, putting away a team-high 22 kills while only committing four errors for an impressive clip of .316. Junior Cody Dodd recorded her eighth double-double of the season as she put away 12 kills and scooped up 17 digs. Dodd also added four blocks and three service aces.

Sophomore setter Sharon Anderson piloted the offense as she dished out 44 assists and recorded 12 digs for her 10th double-double of the season. Senior libero Courtney Smith rallied the backcourt as she recorded a match-high 28 digs. Joining her in backcourt dominance were sophomore Kennedy Wade and freshman Allison Morrett. Wade tallied 10 digs, her third double-digit game of the season. Morrett gathered up six digs, but proved her authority from the service line as she recorded a season-high five service aces, three of which game in the pivotal set four.

Alexis Plagens led the Colonels with a match-high 24 kills, adding eight digs. Rachel Vick added 11 kills and seven digs. Setter Abbey Cvelber dished out 52 assists, tallied 13 digs, and added five kills for EKU.

As a team, the Golden Eagles dominated from the service line, tallying nine service aces to EKU's five. Tech also topped the Colonels in team blocks, 7-4.

The Golden Eagles return home next weekend for a two-game home stand. Fans may experience déjà vu as the Golden Eagles will play both Morehead State and Eastern Kentucky for the second straight week. Tech will host EKU on Friday night at 7 p.m. CT, while they host the Eagles Saturday at 4 p.m.
