COOKEVILLE, Tenn. – The Tennessee Tech softball team is coming off a series win at Morehead State and will look to continue its recent success on Wednesday when the Golden Eagles hit the road to play Western Kentucky.
Game time for the mid-week game is scheduled for 6 p.m., serving as just the fourth time this season Tech will play a night game. The Golden Eagles are 2-1 in their previous three games under the lights.
For the season, Tech has a 22-27 overall record, while WKU will enter the game sporting a 26-22 mark.
Holly Thomas will lead the charge for the Golden Eagles fresh off of her OVC Pitcher of the Week selection. Thomas bounced back from a shortened outing against No. 17 Tennessee to record victories in each of her next three appearances while allowing just one earned run. She defeated second-place Morehead State twice, going the distance and allowing just one earned run while striking out six for her first win. Thomas earned the second win after pitching 4 2/3 innings in relief without allowing an earned run and striking out seven. For the week, she averaged more than a strikeout per inning with 17 punch-outs in 16 innings.
Melody Christian and Whitney Cummings have also been putting up gaudy numbers of late for the Golden Eagles.
Christian raised her batting average 45 points last week after hitting .591 in Tech's six games. She finished the week second in the OVC Player of the Week voting after swiping five stolen bases in five attempts and scoring five runs.
Cummings has discovered her power stroke of late, hitting three home runs in the team's last five games. After hitting seven homers during her freshman campaign, Cummings, a sophomore, has upped her season home run total to nine, good for fourth in the Ohio Valley Conference.
Top players for WKU include pitchers Kim Wagner and Mallorie Sulaski. Wagner leads the team with a 14-9 record and 1.97 earned run average, while Sulaski has been one of Western Kentucky's most effective hitters with a team-best batting average of .354.
Western Kentucky and Tennessee Tech have met nine previous times with the Golden Eagles winning five of those match-ups.
