Golden Eagles finish sixth in OVC rifle championships

MURRAY, Ky. - After the two-day Ohio Valley Conference Rifle Championship event, the Tennessee Tech rifle team finished in sixth place. The Golden Eagles had a team score of 2204 in the smallbore on Saturday, and followed that up with a 2242 in the air rifle on Sunday for combined score of 4446.

Murray State won the six-team championship even with a team score of 4595 to claim the OVC championship. Jacksonville State finished second at 4577, followed by Morehead State at 4525, UT Martin mixed at 4533 and UT Martin women at 4547.

Austin Litherland led the Golden Eagles in the air rifle with 582. Curtin Gagne shot 561, John Zimmerer shot 550 and Jessica McCauley shot 549 for Tech. The Golden Eagles finished in sixth place in both events.

Litherland earned smallbore and air rifle second team honors. The air rifle athlete of the year was Murray State's Emily Quiner, while Jacksonville State's Brian Carstensen took home smallbore athlete of the year honors.

The Racers claimed their ninth OVC rifle championship in school history, and the schools first since 2005.
