COOKEVILLE, Tenn. – Freshman wide receiver/return specialist Metrius Fleming has certainly made a name for himself on the football field this season.

Now he's standing up with some of the top freshman players in the country as STATS FCS announced its initial watch list for the 2019 Jerry Rice Award, honoring the top freshman in the Football Championship Subdivision.

It's the second year in a row that Tennessee Tech has had a player in the running as sophomore quarterback Bailey Fisher was a semifinalist for the award last season. Three of the first four recipients of the award – Towson running back Terrance West, Eastern Washington wide receiver Cooper Kupp and Fordham running back Chase Edmonds – have gone on to NFL careers.

The award is named after NFL legend – and former Mississippi Valley State wide receiver – Jerry Rice.

This season, Fleming has 38 catches for 542 yards and two touchdowns, 14 carries for 90 yards and two touchdowns, a 27.7-yard kickoff return average with a 91-yard kickoff return touchdown and averages 116.3 all-purpose yards per game.

Fleming has earned the Ohio Valley Conference's Newcomer of the Week award four times this season, while also being named an honorable mention for the STATS FCS National Freshman of the Week three times.

A national panel of over 150 sports information and media relations directors, broadcasters, writers and dignitaries will vote on the award at the conclusion of the regular season.
