Golden Eagles can’t get things going against Tennessee State

NASHVILLE --- Despite a promising first set that went the way of Tennessee State by a pair of points, the Tennessee Tech volleyball team was not able to gain the season-sweep over the Tigers, as the Golden Eagles took the three-set loss.

The opening frame began with some good back-and-forth action as both teams were squared up at 10 early. TSU was able to build a five-point lead at 18-13, but TTU remained scrappy as junior Kelsey Gray and freshman Ellen Conti each tallied three kills, as the Golden Eagles knotted up the score at 23.

Tennessee State recovered just in time, as it took the final two points for a 25-23 first set victory.

The middle slate opened just like the first with both teams tied up early at 13. The Tigers were able to keep the Golden Eagles grounded through the remainder of the set as TSU used a 12-7 run the secure the second set at 25-19.

The Tigers took the match with a 25-18 victory in the final set.

Sophomore Natalie Penrod paced the Golden Eagle offense for the second time this weekend, as she tallied 12 kills. Conti and Gray tallied seven kills each as well. Junior Madison Comperry dished out a team-high 20 assists, while sophomore Allison May posted eight digs.

The Tigers were led by Terakka Walker, who posted a match-high 16 kills, while Erika Moss notched 36 assists.

The Golden Eagles (4-22, 3-13 OVC) continue their road trip next Friday, as they take on the Eastern Illinois Panthers, at 7 p.m.
