Golden Eagles get OVC Championship preview Saturday at APSU Invitational

COOKEVILLE, Tenn. – The Tennessee Tech track & field team will get a sneak preview Saturday of where it will compete next month in the Ohio Valley Conference Championships, when the Golden Eagles take part in the APSU Invitational.

Austin Peay will host the OVC meet May 15-16, and coach Wayne Angel and a contingent of 14 Tech runners, jumpers and throwers will sample the facilities Saturday. In addition, two members of the Golden Eagle men's cross country team will attend to compete in the 800-meter run.

Running and jumping events will take place in Governors Stadium, while throwing competition will be held at nearby Edith Petus Park. Various field events begin at 10 a.m. with track events scheduled to kick off at 11 a.m.

Other conference teams in the field, also looking for a preview of the OVC meet, including Belmont, Jacksonville State and Murray State. Non-OVC schools sending teams include Western Kentucky, Bethel, Life and Lipscomb.

Nine personal best marks were established last week by the Golden Eagles at the Boston-Moon Relays at Tennessee State University.

For Tech, competition begins at 10 a.m. with Ashley Lowe, Bethany Parker and Jaelyn Todd in the discus, while Chelsea Mills will open the day in the long jump. At 11:30 a.m., Makayla Kington and Parker compete in the shot put.

Running events for the Golden Eagles open at noon with the 4x400m relay. Tech's foursome will come from the group of Tiara Hymon, Brooklyn Kimball, Brittany McGee, Mills, Kayla Turange and Atlanta Westbrook.

Kimball will run the 400-meter dash at 1:30 p.m., while Kington begins tossing the javelin. At 2 p.m., Hymon, McGee, Mills and Turange will race the 100-meter dash. At 2:30 p.m., Madison Stremler, Priscah Jemeli and Kathie O'Neill run the 800-meter race. Daniel Williamson and Colin Gwaltney will run in the men's portion of the 800m.

The 200m at 3 p.m. will include Mills, Turange and Westbrook, and the day's competition will close for Tech with Sonel Bezuidenhout battling in the 5,000-meter run.

Following Saturday's action, the Golden Eagles have a week to prepare for their next action. That will come April 24-25 at the Arkansas State Red Wolves Invitational. Tech will also run in the Tennessee Challenge, May 1-2 in Knoxville, before the OVC meet back in Clarksville.
