Lowery breaks pole vault mark, several wins for track & field team

SEWANEE, Tenn. -- Katie Lowery just keeps raising the bar...literally. The Golden Eagle sophomore broke her own school record in the pole vault Saturday, clearing the bar at 9 feet, 8 inches to win her event at the Sewanee Invitational indoor track & field meet.

It was a successful day for coach Tony Cox's team, which earned six individual first place finishes and both relay events. In addition to the school record by Lowery, five other personal best marks were established.

All four classes claimed events for Tech. Finishing first were seniors Ashley Mayhew (shot put) and Katherine Lynn (high jump), junior Emily Weinzetl (400m), sophomores Lowery and Justine Phillips (LJ), and freshman Peri Winborne (3000m).

Mayhew paced a trio of Golden Eagles who finished in the top seven in the shot put. Her winning toss was 41 feet, one-half inch. Madison Borden placed second and Haley Wennerstrom was seventh with a personal-best effort.

Lynn was Tech's lone entry in the high jump, and she captured the event with a jump of 5 feet, 3.75 inches.

In the long jump, Phillips topped her previous best mark when she cleared 15 feet, 9.5 inches.

Tech got victories in two running events, sweeping the top four spots in the 400m and posting six of the 10 best times in the 3,000-meter run.

Weinzetl's time of 1:02.11 was the best at 400m, while Danielle Catlett was second, Brittany Cotto third and Jenna Philpot fourth. In the longest event of the day, Winborn legged out the 3,000-meter title in 11:18.38. Teammates following her across the line included Rebecca Cline in third place, Beth Miller fifth, Meghan O'Donoghue seventh, Emily Williams ninth and Amelia McCoy 10th.

Freshman Kelli Keck posted a career-best while placing second in the triple jump at 34 feet, 7 inches, while Krysten Joshen placed third.

Tech had four of the top eight in the mile run, including a personal-best by Yeshi Dohrmann in eighth place. Finishing second was Leah Bradley, followed by Traci Jones in third place and Emily Williams in sixth.

Bradley was second at 800m and Jones placed fourth.

In the 55-meter dash, Joshen finished sixth, while junior Ifey Eguzo led four Tech runners in the 200-meter dash. She placed third, followed by Joshen in eighth place, Elisa Tanksley in 11th and Dalis Connell with a PR to finish 14th.

The Sewanee Invitational was Tech's final competition before the OVC Indoor Championships, Feb. 25-26, at Eastern Illinois University.
