Track team ready for Saturday's Invitational in Sewanee

COOKEVILLE, Tenn. -- While he expects to see good results in the high jump, weight throw and pole vault, another primary focus for Tennessee Tech track & field coach Tony Cox Saturday will be to get his young distance runners experience on an indoor track.

Cox will take a team of 27 to Sewanee for the University of the South Invitational. A field of 10 teams is expected to compete, but no team scores will be tallied.

Tech has been led this season by seniors Katherine Lynn in the high jump, Ashley Mayhew in the weight throw, and sophomore Katie Lowery in the pole vault. All three should be among the leaders in their events Saturday. Last weekend at Tennessee State, both Lynn and Mayhew broke school records on the way to winning their events.

Madison Borden has also shown steady improvement in both the shot put and weight throw, and could be among the leaders Saturday.

In addition to their continued improvement, Cox sees Saturday's meet as a chance to give his young distance runners another opportunity to run indoors.

"Many of our distance runners are freshmen or they have never run on an indoor track," Cox said. "We're going to different tracks with different distances, and that will help them to improve. They will learn to pace themselves on different sized tracks. They're still learning to pace themselves indoors."

The 3,000-meter run will be an excellent event for Tech, which will have eight runners on the teack -- Rebecca Cline, Peri Winborne, Beth Miller, Amelia McCoy, Brittany Brown, Megan O'Donoghue, Yeshi Dohrmann and Emily Williams. All of those runners have run in  one or two meets this year except McCoy, who missed last week's meet with an illness. She will be making her track & field debut for the Golden Eagles.

Results from the Sewanee Invitational will be posted on TTUsports.com when they become available.
