Tech bats strike for six-run inning, but Morehead rallies for sweep

COOKEVILLE, Tenn. – Tennessee Tech scored six runs in the bottom of the fourth inning to take a 6-1 lead over Morehead State, but the visiting Eagles responded for six runs of their own in the fifth. Tech tied the game in the bottom half, but MSU scored the go-ahead runs in the sixth and came away with a 9-7 victory to complete the sweep on Sunday.

Tech (3-23, 0-3 Ohio Valley Conference) returns to action this weekend on the road at OVC newcomer Lindenwood.

Gracelyn Woollen started well, allowing just one run through the first four innings as Morehead State took a 1-0 lead in the third on a groundout to short following an error.

The Golden Eagles batted around in the bottom of the fourth. Haeli Bryson led off with a bunt single, then stole second. After Carmen Betts reached on a four-pitch walk, a fielder's choice allowed Abby Buettner to reach with everyone safe and the bases loaded.

Nicolle Nysted drove in the first run with a single up the middle, then Jordan Key collected a RBI single through the left side. Meagan Houk had a two-run double to right center. Abby Shoulders plated a run as Key scored on a sacrifice bunt, then Houk scored as she stole home.

Morehead State struck for six runs in the top of the fifth on five hits, then added two more runs in the sixth.

Betts, Bryson and Nysted each went 2-for-3 in the contest.

Woollen's line ended with six runs allowed – five earned – on eight hits, walking three and striking out three. Callie Piper pitched the final three frames, allowing three runs on five hits, walking three and striking out there.
