Sambu paces Golden Eagle runners at Commodore Classic


NASHVILLE, Tenn. -- Junior Geoffrey Sambu posted the 11th fastest 8K time in Tennessee Tech men's cross country history, and two other Golden Eagles recorded personal-best times as Tech placed 16th among 20 teams Saturday morning at the Commodore Classic, hosted by Vanderbilt University at Nashville's Percy Warner Park.

Sambu covered the distance in 25.51.1, his sixth-best time as a Golden Eagle at that distance, to finish 39th overall in the field that included 20 teams and 213 runners.

Louisville won the team title with 53 points, posting a slim margin over Ohio State (68). Middle Tennessee (111) was third, followed byGEorgia Tech (129) and Lipscomb (133) to round out the top five teams. TEch was one of four Ohio Valley Conference teams in the event. Southeast Missouri (300) led the OVC contingent with a 12th place showing while Belmont (301) was 13th. Murray State (434) nipped Tech (435) by a single point for 15th place.

"Our men were solid today as a team," said coach Wayne Angel. "We still have a ways to go, but we will eventually get there."

Junior Daniel Williamson was the second Tech runner across the finish line, placing 71st overall with a time of 26:26.8, which was the second-best time he has posted and the 24th fastest in school history.

mos Kipchirchir (27:32.8) was next for Tech, finishing 137th, while Timothy Misoy (28:26.2) placed 169th. Tech got a pair of personal-best times, led by Noah Rotich (28:39.6) in 177th place. Collin Gwaltney (30:04.4) was Tech's sixth finisher in 197th place, while the other PR came from Joshua Daughtry (30:23.7) whi finished at 203.

The Golden Eagles take next weekend off from competition, then race in the Greater Louisville Classic on Saturday, Oct. 3.
