Golden Eagles extend winning streak to three

COOKEVILLE, Tenn. – Behind their third sweep of the season, the Tennessee Tech Golden Eagles extended their winning streak to three matches as they swept the UT Martin Skyhawks. Tech (9-18, 7-9 OVC) won by the scores of 25-21, 25-22 and 25-19.

"We talked about playing a more complete match," head coach John Blair said. ""It's been a while since we've had a streak like this, but we played a pretty solid match."

Tech took control of the first set early as it was able to build an 18-12 lead, only to see the Skyhawks come back and tie it at 18. The Golden Eagles recovered quickly and finished the set on a 7-3 run to take the opening set 25-21. Sophomore Kelsey Gray and freshman Natalie Penrod each tallied four kills.

The Golden Eagles came out strong in the second set and built a 20-14 lead. UT Martin managed to pull within one at 22-21, but Tech recovered once again to take the set 25-22. Senior Leah Meffert recorded eight kills while hitting 53.8 percent.

Tennessee Tech built a four-point lead at 10-6 in the third set and never looked back as it took the third set 25-19 and completed the sweep.

Meffert paced the Golden Eagle offense with 12 kills, while Gray and Penrod added 11 and 10 kills, respectively. Senior Melanie Culp posted 38 assists, while freshman Allison May tallied a team-high 16 digs.

Tennessee Tech hosts Eastern Illinois Friday, at 7 p.m.
