Golden Eagles draw with Panthers; 1-1 through double overtime

COOKEVILLE, Tenn. -- In their sixth overtime bout of the 2010 season, the Golden Eagles played a full 110-minute game on Sunday, tying the EIU Panthers at one-all.

Sophomore Sarah Gawthrop put the first point on the board for the Golden Eagles when she went down in the box in Tech's attacking half. Gawthrop was awarded a penalty shot, which she directed easily to the left side netting with 24:38 on the clock.

Tech held off the Panthers for the remainder of the first half, but EIU's Kaitlin Sullivan found the back of the net in the 50th minute during a scrap match in the box. The assist on the goal was credited to Kristin Germann.

The back-and-forth dogfight yielded multiple additional opportunities for both teams, but neither could finish an attack.

TTU notched 10 shots from seven different players on the game. Michelle Decker, Kris Cambron and Brooke Mayo led the way with two shots apiece, while Sullivan and Ashley Eck logged four shots each for EIU.

Golden Eagle goalkeeper Becca Toler played the full 120 in net, facing 13 shots by the Panthers and recording five saves. EIU keeper Kaylin Lorbert notched three saves on the day as Tech fired off 10 shots on the day.

"We went 0-5 in all of our overtime games up until today," said head coach Daniel Brizard. "The team really held it together today and played a full game together.

"It would have been nice to snag an OT win, since we've given up a few this year, but holding a tough EIU team to a tie is nothing to be ashamed of," he continued.

Tech will close out the regular season at home next weekend, facing Austin Peay and Jacksonville State on Friday and Sunday.
