Golden Eagles battle Texas State in Birmingham

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - Two days after matching a school record with seven goals in a match, the Tennessee Tech soccer team's offense was silenced in a neutral site contest against Texas State, as the Golden Eagles fell 3-0 to the Bobcats at Samford University in Birmingham, Ala.

The Golden Eagles got three shots from junior Ashley Smith, and a shot on goal from junior Taren Brown, but couldn't find the back of the net.

Texas State's Britney Curry scored the game's first goal just under 13 minutes into the match. Sophomore goalkeeper Kaitlyn Thacker had three saves for the Golden Eagles before leaving the game in the 36th minute. Less than two minutes later Texas State's Kelly Taylor would put a header past freshman keeper Megan Polk into the bottom left corner to give the Bobcats a 2-0 advantage. Texas State's Taylor Person would add the game's final goal off a penalty kick in the second half.

The Bobcats finished with 18 shots, including eight on goal, and topped the Golden Eagles in corner kicks 8-to-1. Tech falls to 1-4-0 on the season, while Texas State, which won the Southland Conference and advanced to the NCAA tournament a season ago, improves to 2-3-0.

For the second consecutive match, 22 different Golden Eagles saw playing time, including 12 freshmen.

The match was the third of Tech's current seven-game road trip. The Golden Eagles will continue their travels next weekend with a trip to Belmont on Sept. 11 and UNC Asheville on Sept. 13.

Tech will play its next home match on Sept. 25 when it hosts UT Martin to open up Ohio Valley Conference play. Admission to all Tech home matches is free.
