OOKEVILLE, Tenn. -- Morehead State, which still harbors hopes of winning the 2009 Ohio Valley Conference regular season title, comes calling Saturday night on the Golden Eagle women in Eblen Center. The MSU Eagles are 8-4 in the league, making them one of six teams that could emerge on top of the standings.

It will be a night to remember for senior Blair Bowens, who will be recognized prior to the introduction of lineups as the newest member of Tech's 1,000-Point Club. Bowens tied her career-high Thursday with 27 points to become the 25th player in women's basketball history at Tech to achieve the milestone.

The Golden Eagles, meanwhile, are hoping to add some wins in the final weeks of the season and put themselves in position to make a run in the OVC Tournament. Tech grabbed an impressive 82-64 win Thursday against Eastern Kentucky, making the Golden Eagles 3-9 in the league and tied for seventh place.

History is on Tech’s side, with the Golden Eagles owning a ridiculous 51-16 advantage in the all-time series. Morehead State, however, has won the last three contests, including a 51-49 nail-biter a year ago in Eblen Center.

On Saturday, however, Morehead showed its grit, overcoming a 20-point deficit at Jacksonville State to win by 10 in overtime.

Bowens continues to pace the Golden Eagles in the scoring column, averaging 14.5 points per game overall and 15.4 points against the conference to rank 11th in the league. The team’s top 3-point gunner, Bowens is shooting nearly 44 percent from outside the arc in OVC play, and has made 65 this year. In her four-year career, she has knocked down 150-for-401 from long range, placing her fourth in the program’s history for most treys. She is second on the team in steals, third in assists and fourth in rebounds.

Senior Meagan Lyons is second on the team in scoring, averaging 9.6 points per game. The speedy Lyons is first on the roster in steals, and second in both assists and rebounds.

Sophomore Jasmine White, the featured player on tonight’s program cover, ranks first on the team in rebounds with 6.4 per game, and is third in scoring, averaging 8.6 points per contest.

The Golden Eagles have also had plenty of balance in the scoring department from junior Vivian Nwosu (6.7 ppg), freshman Krystal Stirrup (6.3 ppg), senior Alison Price (6.3 ppg) and freshman Tacarra Hayes (5.8 ppg).

Morehead State, which is third in the league in scoring and fourth in defense, leads the OVC in blocked shots and 3-pointers made per game. The Eagles are dropping through an average of 8.4 bombs per contest to rank among national leaders.

Sophomore Chynna Bozeman, who is atop the OVC in 3-pointers per game, ranks seventh in the conference in scoring and sixth in assists. Brittany Pittman leads the OVC in blocked shots, ranks second in rebounds and 16th in scoring, while Tiffany Hamilton is third in the conference in 3-pointers made and 17th in scoring.

In the first meeting with Morehead State, the Golden Eagles dropped a 64-52 contest in Kentucky, despite a 47-32 edge in rebounds.

Tech survived a scoreless drought of nearly 10 minutes in the first half, but Morehead State held the Golden Eagles without a basket for more than 12 minutes in the second half to gain an advantage that it never gave up.

Down 40-38, the Eagles got a couple of 3-pointers from Bozeman and went on top 47-40. Tech pulled to within four, 50-46, with 4:22 remaining, but Morehead State scored the next 13 points for a 63-46 lead.

Bozeman scored 26 points, hitting 6-for-7 from 3-point range to lead the Eagles. Pittman had nine points, five rebounds and nine blocks. Tiffanie Stephens and Ashley Martin also scored nine each for MSU.

Tech had three players in double figures, as both Bowens and White had 15 points and eight rebounds. Nwosu had a double-double with 10 points and a career-best 12 rebounds. 

Plenty of great seats remain for the games by calling the Athletic Ticket Office in Eblen Center, or at the game. Doors and ticket booths open Saturday at 4:30 p.m.
