COOKEVILLE, Tenn. -- The largest team in school history will
compete Saturday when the Tennessee Tech women's track & field
team opens the 2010 indoor season at the TSU Invitational.
Head coach Tony Cox will take 27 women to the event, along with
seven men who will compete on an individual basis in TSU's Gentry
Center. The field events get underway at 8 a.m. and the running
events will start at 10 a.m.
Cox listed a handful of Tech athletes he expects to make the
largest impact Saturday, including senior Tiffany Palmer, a
distance runner from Cleveland, Tenn., one of the favorites at
5,000 meter. A first-team all-OVC performer during the cross
country season, Palmer won the OVC Outdoor 10K championship last
year in Richmond, Ky.
Ashley Mayhew, a junior from Athens, Tenn., is another Tech
athlete expected to be among the top performers in the weight throw
Saturday.
Two speedsters who were newcomers to the track team last year
after completing four-year careers on the women's basketball team,
Meagan Lyons and Allison Price also figure to be among the leaders
in their events at TSU. Lyons will challenge in the 55-meter
hurdles while Price will run the 400-meter dash.
Another Golden Eagle who could have an impact Saturday is senior
Katherine Lynn, a high jumper from Cookeville who sat out last
season with an injury.
Cox said everyone on the team is healthy and ready to compete.
