Golden Eagle tennis puts together solid showing in first event of fall campaign

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – The Tennessee Tech tennis team unwrapped its 2022 fall campaign with three consecutive days on the court in Nashville as part of the Belmont Fall Invitational. Taking aim in a trio of dual-style affairs, the Golden Eagles clashed against Youngstown State on Friday, a mix of Lipscomb and Vanderbilt players on Saturday and Belmont on Sunday.

Tech concluded its three-day stay in Music City with a 6-3 doubles mark and a 7-10 singles ledger.


Youngstown State vs. Tennessee Tech

In the opening bout with the Penguins, the Golden Eagles posted a 1-2 doubles record and split their six singles clashes. Mika Berghaus, Evzen Holis and freshman Jaime Paquet all collected solo triumphs, while Carlos Vicente, Jun Sasagawa and Pol Masafret were upended in their respective matchups.

Berghaus rallied back after dropping the first set 6-2 to Alvarez Moreno, as the Parana, Argentina product picked up a 6-4 nod in the second set and a 7-6 decision in the third. Holis had a similar fate after falling 6-2 to Harry Fouzas in the opener, before bouncing back with consecutive 6-2 wins to capture the matchup. Paquet needed only two sets in his triumph with a 7-6 victory in the opener and a 6-3 win in the second set against Will Everett.

As far as doubles play is concerned, Vicente and Masafret teamed up for a 6-4 win against Everett and Nathan Favier for TTU's lone tandem nod. Sasagawa and Holis were tripped up 7-6 (8-6) by Fouzas and Larentiu Mandocescu, while Berghaus and Paquet fell 6-1 to Moreno and Clement Mainguy.

 

Vanderbilt/Lipscomb vs. Tennessee Tech

TTU's Saturday affair featured a mix of Commodores and Bisons, with the purple and gold claiming all three doubles battles to go along with a 2-4 solo account. Jun Sasagawa and Evzen Holis took home a 7-5 nod over Macsen Sisam and Michael Ross, while Carlos Vicente and Pol Masafret secured a 6-1 decision against Connor Robb-Wilcox and Mitchell Deames and Mika Berghaus and Jaime Paquet picked up a 7-5 victory over Maksim Bogdanovich and Alex Mesquida.

Sasagawa and Berghaus accounted for Tech's two solo achievements, with Sasagawa earning a 6-4, 6-4 win over Mesquida and Berghaus notching a 6-4, 7-6 triumph against Sisam. Paquet, Vicente, Masafret and Holis were all upended in their respective solo bouts.


Belmont vs. Tennessee Tech

The Golden Eagles flashed similar tandem success in their battle with the Bruins, capturing two of three doubles tilts in addition to a 2-3 singles mark. Pol Masafret and Carlos Vicente powered past Jack Randall and Gabriel Sardo with a 6-3 nod, while Mika Berghaus and Jaime Paquet took down Ian Cruz and Niklas Von Hellens, 7-5. Marko Illic and Tomas Luis picked up a 6-3 victory against Jun Sasagawa and Evzen Holis for TTU's only tandem defeat.

Berghaus put the finishing touches on a perfect singles weekend after securing a straight-set solo win over Illic that featured scores of 7-6 and 6-1. Holis joined Berghaus in the winner's circle behind a 6-4, 0-6, 6-1 victory against Tomas.

Masafret, Sasagawa and Vicente were all downed in their respective singles clashes. Sasgawa and Vicente were tripped up in three sets.
