Arovin and Esteban prevail, but Golden Eagles fall at Georgioa Tech


ATLANTA, Ga. -- Georgia Tech claimed the doubles point, then swept to straight set victories in five events while claiming all six singles points on the way to a 7-0 victory Saturday evening over Tennessee Tech in non-conference tennis action.

Tech did capture one match, with the No. 1 doubles pair of Alex Arovin and Alberto Esteban outlasting their No. 51 ranked opponents, Carlos Benito and Eduardo Sugita, for an easy 8-1 win.

Their victory gave Tech a glimmer of hope, knotting the match in the very early going following an 8-3 loss in the No. 3 position when Cole Fiegel and Daniel Yun claimed an 8-3 win over Artem Tarasov and Jorge Alfonzo.

The double point was captured by the Yellowjackets when Christopher Eubanks and Elijah Melendez posted an 8-4 win over Eduardo Mena and Alvaro Cintas in the No. 2 spot.

Leading 1-0 in the match, Georgia Tech claimed all six singles matches, with only one set victory for the Golden Eagles when Mena rolled to a 6-2 win in the first set in the No. 3 singles battle. Cole Fiegel fought back to tie that match with a 7-6 win in the second set, then won the point with a 6-3 win in the third set.

Segura took a 6-0, 6-1 win over Cintas in the No. 4 spot for a 2-0 lead, and 57th ranked Eubanks overpowered Arovin, 6-3, 6-3, in the No. 1 match to make it 3-0. The match was decided when Melendez won a 6-2, 6-3 outing with Alfonzo at No. 6.

The Yellowjackets weren't finished, making it a sweep with wins in the final three contest. First, Benito topped Esteban, 6-2, 6-4, followed bu a 6-3, 6-4 win by Yun over Carlos Tejas at No. 5. The final point when to Fiegel in the No. 3 spot, when he outlasted Mena in three sets.

The Golden Eagles close out their busy, three-match weekend with a stop at Kennesaw State for a 1 p.m. match Sunday.
