ETSU blanks Golden Eagles 7-0 to open three-match weekend


BRISTOL, Tenn. -- The Tennessee Tech tennis team opened a busy, three-match weekend by taking a 7-0 loss to East Tennessee State at the Bristol Racquet & Fitness Club in Bristol, Tenn.

The Buccaneers (3-6) earned the doubles point by winning at the No. 2 and No. 3 spots, then clinched all six single matches in straight sets to get the weekend underway for the Golden Eagles (1-6).

Conner Huertas and Sebastian Yllera started the day with a 6-1 win over Jorge Alfonzo and Artem Tarasov at No. 3 doubles. Shortly after, Robert Herrera and Ismael Merino clinched a 6-1 win over Eduardo Mena and Alvaro Cintas at No. 2 to give ETSU the doubles point. The No. 1 match went unfinished.

In singles play, Huertas and Yllera were the first Bucs to finish play, with Huertas defeating Carlos Tejas, 6-2, 6-1, at No. 4 singles, and Yllera besting Cintas, 6-3, 6-2, at No. 3, leaving ETSU one point from the win. |Rogerio Ribeiro earned the match-clinching point at No. 2 singles, defeating Mena, 6-1, 6-3, to give the Bucs a 4-0 advantage.

The final three points also went to the Bucs. At No. 1, David Biosca topped Esteban, 6-4, 6-4, while the No. 6 point went to Herrera with a 6-0, 6-3 victory over Tarasov. The day ended with Merino picking up a 6-2, 6-4 win over Alfonzo.

Tech's weekend continues with a 4:30 p.m. CT match at Georgia Tech.
