Purple and gold on the board after day two of OVC Outdoor Track & Field Championships

MURRAY, Ky. – The Tennessee Tech outdoor track & field team got onto the scoreboard and saw a fair share of personal records on day two of the Ohio Valley Conference Outdoor Track & Field Championships Thursday on the campus of Murray State University.

For the second straight day, Anya Akili was the tone-setter for the Golden Eagles, completing the heptathlon in fourth place to earn her squad its first points of the league's postseason event. Securing a personal-best 4,658 points, she scored five points for the purple and gold.

She earned a second-place showing in the long jump with a mark of 5.34 meters (17'6.25") and followed with a PR of 28.09 meters (92'2") in the javelin to place third. The junior completed the heptathlon with a third-place finish in the 800-meter dash, clocking in at 2:30.92.

Rahab Sawe also brought home some points for the Cookeville crew, racing to a career-best showing of 11:10.60 in the 3,000-meter steeplechase. Earning a sixth-place finish, she collected three points for the Tech score.

Rookie Amara Nwajagu kept her chances at big points alive by qualifying for the 400-meter dash finals with a sixth-place finish in the preliminaries. She sprinted to a PR of 56.97 seconds to clinch a finals berth.

In the 100-meter dash, both Kategie Casseus and Ashtin Holman picked up career-best marks, led by Casseus. The Tech newcomer clocked in at 12.41 while Holman claimed a new PR of 12.57 seconds.

Northern Illinois transfer Britnie Dixon also earned a personal record on the day, competing in the 800-meters. The junior clocked in at 2:13.25 for a new career mark, narrowly missing a spot in the finals with a ninth-place finish.

Day 3 of the OVC Championships is set to kick off Friday morning at 11:00 a.m. CT with field events. Running events will begin at 12:30 p.m.
