Tech heads to Murray for 2022 OVC Outdoor Track & Field Championships

COOKEVILLE, Tenn. – The Tennessee Tech outdoor track and field team head to Murray, Ky. for the third time this season, this time competing in the Ohio Valley Conference Outdoor Championships from May 11-13. 

OVC Outdoor Championships Information
May 11-13, 2022 – Located at Roy Stewart Stadium and Marshall Gage Track in Murray, Ky. Some throwing events will be held at Hamilton Field on the Murray State campus.

The OVC Championships get going Wednesday (May 11) with the decathlon and heptathlon and the finals of the discus and men's javelin at Hamilton Field. At Stewart Stadium, multi-events will be staged as well as the final of the men's and women's pole vault. In the evening, prelims for the 1500m, 400m hurdles, and 200m will be staged and the final event of the day will be the finals of the men's and women's 10k.

On Thursday (May 12), finals for the long jump, and hammer throw will be completed in the morning. Prelims for the men's 110m hurdles and women's 100m hurdles will take place, followed by prelims for the 400m run. The final events of the day are the prelims of the 100m and 800m runs and the finals of the 3k Steeplechase.

Friday (May 13) is a day to decide the team championship and the individual titles for 14 events.

All-session tickets are $25 and single-day tickets are $10. Tickets may be purchased through the Murray State ticket office online. Live scoring will be provided through OVCSports.com and the three-day event will be broadcast on ESPN+.

What to Watch For
The Golden Eagles head into the league's annual championship event with fresh legs and momentum, having last competed at the Outdoor Music City Challenge Apr. 29-30. Three members of the purple and gold delivered new personal-best marks at the meet, continuing to show growth as the OVC Championships approached.

Taking part in the 200-meter dash, Anya Akili raced to a finish of 25.23 seconds, just one one-hundredth of a second off her career-best showing. Trenia Stephens also delivered a PR in the event, finishing right behind her teammate with a time of 25.43. Competing in the 200-meter for the first time, Amara Nwajagu was the third Golden Eagle to cross the finish line, squeaking in just behind Stephens at 25.63 seconds.

Akili turned in a fourth-place finish in the long jump after qualifying for the finals, recording a PR as well. The junior leaped to a distance of 5.47 meters (17'11.5"). Also clinching a spot in the finals and earning a top-10 performance was Samaria Allen, tallying a mark of 5.24 meters (17'2.25").

Rahab Sawe contributed her own personal record on the day in the 3,000-meter steeplechase. Placing eighth overall, she clocked in at 11:29.33. Maddie Long competed in the 1,500-meter run to close out the Tech competitors, finishing at 5:08.21

The Golden Eagles will get one final tune-up prior to the NCAA East Preliminary Championships, taking part in the Lee University Last Chance Meet on Saturday, May. 14 in Cleveland, Tenn.
