Tech track & field team finishes strong at Hilltopper Relays

BOWLING GREEN, Ky. – It was another round of strong performances for the Tennessee Tech track & field team, as the Golden Eagles wrapped up the second and final day of action at the Hilltopper Relays hosted by Western Kentucky at the Charles M. Ruter Track & Field Complex.

After setting a season-high mark of 1.55m in the high jump on Friday, freshman Cayla Johnson continued her successful weekend in the javelin. The Upper Marlboro, Md. native made the finals in the event, placing ninth after recording a throw of 25.63m.

Turning in the top marks on the day for the Golden Eagles in the event was fellow freshman Katie Long. The Boaz, Ala. native also made the finals, finishing sixth overall with a throw of 34.36m.

Tech saw a trio of great showings in the triple jump, led by Nashville native Jalena Curbeam. The sophomore registered a distance of 10.93m, a season-best mark that placed her fourth overall.

Also tallying a season milestone in the event was freshman Jadae Joseph. The Miami native posted a mark of 10.77m, finishing sixth in the triple jump. Right behind her was fellow rookie Samaria Allen in seventh place. The native of Lithonia, Ga. leaped to a distance of 10.70m for a season-best mark.

Another Tech freshman captured a top-five finish on the day, as Trenia Stephens raced to a fifth-place showing in the 100m. She turned in a time of 12.53 in her first taste of the event at the collegiate level. Allen also competed in the 100m for the purple and gold, clocking a time of 13.13 to narrowly miss out on a top-15 finish.

Freshman Ayanna Haywood claimed a top-25 showing in the 200m, capturing a time of 26.59. She was preceded in the final results by sophomore Anya Akili in 14th with a 25.74 and by Stephens in 17th with a 25.94.

The Golden Eagles return to action Friday, Apr. 16 at the Black and Gold Invitational hosted by Vanderbilt in Nashville.
