Rennick records first 2018 event win at Orange & Purple Classic

CLEMSON, S.C. – Tennessee Tech encountered a setback to start off 2018 at the Orange & Purple Classic on Saturday.

In their first indoor meet in over a month, a number of Tech track & field student-athletes were struck with a virus, causing Tech to pare down its previously scheduled events (the team did not appear in the 4x400m relay, for example).

Tech still performed well, highlighted by senior Micayla Rennick. Rennick won the 5000 meter run in her first try in the event so far this season. Her time of 17:12.98 was over a minute faster than second-place finisher Hannah Petit from Georgia Tech, who timed 18:23.88. Rennick also ran the 800 meters for the first time after skipping it in the Vanderbilt Indoor Opener, placing second at 2:18.07.

Fellow distance member Purity Sanga also collected two top-10 finishes in the 3000 meters and mile, placing fourth in the 3000 meters at 10:09.76 and sixth in the mile at 5:09.79.

In the field events, Na'Scottisha Drummond hit 1.65m in the high jump, .01m better than her previous best of 1.64m set during the 2017 OVC Indoor Championships.
