PEORIA, Ill. – Before the Ohio Valley Conference Softball Championship gets underway on Wednesday, the league announced its All-OVC honors on Tuesday. Tennessee Tech got one selection on the teams as infielder Sydney Kirby made the second-team roster.
The teams were voted on by the conference's coaches and sports information contacts but could not vote for their own players.
The Cypress, Texas, standout ended up first in the OVC in doubles, but it was the off-the-sheet statistics that proved impressive. Kirby was 7-for-9 in league play with a runner at third and less than two out, batted .550 – 11-for-20 – as a leadoff batter, was .614 on advancing runners – 35 times out of 57 opportunities, and batted .778 (15-for-36) with runners in scoring position.
Kirby finished 10th in RBI, 12th in total bases and fourth in walks in conference play. In the league slate alone, Kirby led the Golden Eagles in batting with a .378 average, collecting 31 hits – including 12 doubles and three home runs. She posted a .634 slugging percentage and a .438 on-base percentage.
Over all games, Kirby batted .317 with 17 doubles and three homers along with 26 walks, collecting a .497 slugging percentage and a .415 on-base percentage.
The Golden Eagles (19-33) open up the conference tournament on Wednesday at 10 a.m. as they take on Tennessee State.
