Tech sweeps Tigers: Playoff hopes still alive

NASHVILLE, Tenn. -- The Tennessee Tech softball team kept themselves in the hunt Sunday, sweeping Tennessee State in a doubleheader at Tiger Field.  The Golden Eagles scored 14 runs in the twinbill, marking the most runs scored in one day this season. Final scores were 7-5 and 7-3.

Tech's bats appeared to have found lost momentum just in time for a final push toward the conference tournament. The Golden Eagles connected for 19 hits on the day, 12 in the second game.

Chanelle Spalding led the attack with four hits and four RBI; while Melody Christian extended her hitting streak to 13 games, as the senior recorded three hits on the day. Christian hit a triple in the first game, her second of the season, the team's first conference triple, sixth overall. Brittney Spalding had a stellar second game going 3-for-4 at the plate with two doubles, scoring one run and collecting one RBI.

Kendall Hooper bounced back from a tough first game, grabbing two hits, one RBI and a stolen base in the second game. Angi Sakamoto also gave Tech a great showing scoring four runs, with three hits and two RBI.

The Golden Eagles raced around the bases, picking up six free bases in the second game, the most stolen bases in one game this season.

Claudia Harke (6-9) got her first win in two weeks, striking out three Tigers. The lefty pitched five complete innings before Erica Tuck relieved the senior, notching the first save of her career. Taylor Ketchum (14-10) took the circle in the second outing, pitching seven innings, her first win since shutting out Austin Peay 7-0, April 16.

The Golden Eagles return to action at Morehead State Tuesday. Tech will attempt to take on the Eagles for the third time this season. Both teams need two-wins to all but seal a spot in the OVC Tournament. Action is set to begin at 1 p.m. CDT.
