Golden Eagle men earn third-place finish at Belmont Opener, rookie Laboy pace women

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – The Tennessee Tech men's and women's cross country teams wrapped up their season-openers Sunday afternoon, competing at the Belmont Opener at Percy Warner Park.

The Golden Eagle men shined on the afternoon, placing third out of eight teams, with four more teams participating on an individual basis. Tech finished with 88 points, 11 ahead of fourth-place North Alabama.

Senior Ababu Mohamed led the Tech effort with a top-15 overall finish and a time of 25:34.67. Rookies Chase Faudi and Clayton Kirkus followed the veteran among Tech finishers, ranking 17th and 24th overall, respectively.

"This is a strong start from the men," Tech head coach Peter Dalton said. "We are looking forward to welcoming all of the members of our team back to racing soon."

A native of Soddy Daisy, Tenn., Faudi made his Tech debut with a final time of 26:00.42. Kirkus, a White House, Tenn. native, turned in a final time of 26:20.39 in his collegiate debut.

Dalton added, "On the ladies' side, Amanda had a strong debut."

On the women's team, freshman and Franklin, Tenn. native Amanda Laboy led the purple and gold with a 19:46.39. Sophomore Alexa Brugere ranked third among the Golden Eagles with a time of 21:22.69 while junior Courtney McCowan completed the race with a time of 22:27.15.
