COOKEVILLE, Tenn. – John Greene played things cool for
most of the race, running in second place just a few yards behind
the leader. But, over the final mile the Tennessee Tech junior used
a strong finish to capture the men’s individual title in the
TTU Invitational cross country meet held Friday afternoon at
Southern Hills Golf Course.
Greene won the 8K race by five seconds over Mickey Sanders of
Jacksonville State in a time of 26:39.49. His effort, coupled with
a third place showing by sophomore Matt Bishop was almost enough to
lift the Golden Eagle men to the team title, but Jacksonville State
prevailed by a narrow margin.
JSU finished with 25 points, placing six runners in the Top 10.
Tech took second place with 33 points, putting four runners in the
first 10. Tennessee State was a distant third, finishing with 81
points.
In the women’s 5K race, Jacksonville State took the top
three places and won the team title with 27 points. Tech was second
with 49 points, edging UT Chattanooga (50) by a single point.
Alabama A&M took fourth place with 113 points and Tennessee
State (125) was fifth.
Junior Mike Mahan was Tech’s third finisher, placing seventh
in the time of 28:16.33, while junior Adam McLeod also claimed a
Top 10 showing, placing ninth in 28:55.23.
Greene’s time was one of two personal best efforts Friday
for the Tech men’s squad. Freshman Matt Pennycuff also
charted a personal-best with a time of 29:51 while finishing
13th overall as the fifth Golden Eagle across the finish
line. Freshmen Charlie Jordan and Sterling Smith were next to
finish placing 14th and 15th., while junior
Kolbe Andrzejewski was 16th. Tech had a total of 10
runners in the race.
For Jacksonville State, joining Sanders in the Top 10 were Nick
Hager, Matt Brick, Nick Tirop, Jordan Cummins and Andrew Green.
Sophomore Peri Winborne was Tech’s top finisher in the
women’s race, placing fifth overall with a time of 20:13.67.
Sophomore Rebecca Cline and senior Traci Jones also earned Top 10
finishes. Cline was seventh in 20:25.44, while Jones was
10th in 20:41.81.
The individual winner was Giselle Slotboom of Jacksonville State
in 18:40.43, while teammates Ericka Stam and Kailey Jensen finished
second and third. Chattanooga’s Tara Gietma was fourth.
The balance of Tech’s team total came from senior Leah
Bradley in 13th place (20:50.52) and junior Beth Miller
in 14th (20:58.11).
Sophomore Meghan O’Donoghue was next for Tech, posting a
personal best of 21:07.87 to place 15th. In addition to
her PR, three Golden Eagle freshmen established personal best marks
in their first races for coach Tony Cox’s team. Kara Webb
placed 20th in 21:37.21, Elizabeth Mitchell was
27th in 22:50.39, and Katie McCrary was 29th
in 23:23.70. Tech had a total of 15 runners in the field of 45.
The Golden Eagles will be in action next Saturday (Oct. 8) when
they run at the Jacksonville State Invitational.
