Golden Eagles fall twice at No. 20 Tennessee Saturday

 

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. – In a doubleheader that started indoors and finished outside Saturday, the 20th-ranked Tennessee Volunteers posted two victories over Tennessee Tech. The Vols (6-4) defeated the Golden Eagles (1-4) in the first match 6-1 inside Goodfriend Tennis Center, and followed with a 4-0 victory a few hours later at Barksdale Stadium.

Both matches were scheduled to be outdoors, but weather forced play indoors for the first contest.

In the first match of the day, the Golden Eagles lost the doubles point for the first time this season as Tennessee won the No. 2 and No. 3 matches. The No. 1 doubles match went unfinished. At No. 2, Eduardo Mena and Alvaro Cintas fell, 6-3, to Bartosz Sawicki  and Luis Valero. The No. 3 contest also went to UT by a 6-3 score as Andrew Dromsky and  Jack Schipanski topped Othon Lima and Artem Tarasov.

Mena captured a straight set win over Velero in the No. 2 singles contest, but the Vols clinched the win with three straight set win in the bottom three spots. Brandon Fickey managed a 6-1, 6-2 win over Jorge Alfonzo at No. 6, before Mena made it a 2-1 overall match.

The next two points went to UT when Sawicki topped Carlos Tejas, 6-2, 6-3, at No. 5, and Jess Jones handed Cintas a 6-3, 6-1 loss.

With the Vols clinching the win with a 4-1 lead, the two top singles matches were shoreted to 10-point tiebreakers. In the No. 1 position, Alex Arovin battled back after falling 7-5 in the first set to roll to a 6-3 win over Hunter Reese in the second to knot the score. Reese took the tiebreaker, 10-4, and the point.

Esteban put up a valliant fight for the point at the No. 2 spot. He won the first set over Schipanski, 7-6 (4), and led in the second, 4-3, before dropping a 6-4 decision. Schipanski took the tiebreaker, 10-7.

The two teams moved outdoors for the afternoon match, and the format was changed to speed up play. Singles was played first and the match was stopped when the Vols clinched the first four points.

Golden Eagle coach Kenny Doyle scrambled Tech's lineup, allowing Arovin and Esteban to sit out singles play after their marathons in the first match. Mena moved up to play at No. 1, and fell to Reese, 6-2, 6-3. In the No. 2 spot, Lima moved up and dropped a 6-0, 6-0 match to Schipanski. Tejas dropped a 6-1, 6-4 score to Valero at No. 4, and Gagan Jain stepped in at No. 4, faling to Jones, 6-2, 6-0.

The Golden Eagles packed up and headed to Ashville, N.C., following the matches, and will play UNC Ashville Sunday afternoon to close out the weekend's action.
