Tech wraps up weekend with dominant win over TSU

COOKEVILLE, Tenn. – The Tennessee Tech tennis team moved to 3-0 at home so far this season, as the Golden Eagles topped the visiting Tennessee State, 6-1.

Tech (5-12, 3-1 OVC) opened up with a win in the doubles competition, with freshman Jorge Alfonzo and senior Artem Tarasov topping Daniel Bernal and Joseph Daniels, 8-3, in the No. 2 match. Juniors Alvaro Cintas and Gagan Jain took the No. 1 doubles match, 8-6, over Darryl Hale and Kyle Burton. The Golden Eagles swept the doubles play, earning a forfeit in the No. 3 match.

With the typical top three players sitting for the Golden Eagles, Cintas got the call to fill the No. 1 spot, downing TSU's Hale, 6-3, 6-0.

Freshman Carlos Tajes took care of business in the No. 2 position, defeating Daniels 6-1, 6-3. Junior Gagan Jain got the call on Saturday, playing in his first match since Feb. 14. Jain topped Maddox, 6-1, 2-6, 6-3 in the No. 5 match.

Alfonzo took on TSU's Bernal, a player who has spent much of his career in the No. 1 spot. The Golden Eagle freshman took to match from Bernal, winning 7-5, 6-2, in the No. 3 match. Tech earned a forfeit point in the No. 6 match.

The Golden Eagles host three more home matches, with Eastern Illinois coming to town next Friday for a 12 p.m. match.
