Golden Eagles wings clipped by nationally-ranked Cardinals

LOUISVILLE, Ky. – The Tennessee Tech tennis team fell on Tuesday at the hand of nationally-ranked No. 23 Louisville, 6-1.

The doubles point came down to the wire, with Louisville's Van Damrongsri and Albert Wagner opening with a 6-1 win over freshman Eduardo Mena and junior Alvaro Cintas in the No. 2 doubles match.

Tech evened it up with a 6-4 win from senior Artem Tarasov and freshman Jorge Alfonzo, who topped Pally Ray and Chris Simich in the No. 3 doubles.

The deciding match for the doubles point came on a tight battle in the No. 1 spot as Alberto Esteban and Alex Arovin fell 7-6 (7-4) to No. 68 doubles pair in the nation, Jeffery Brown and Alex Gornet.

The Cards controlled the singles play, taking five of the six singles matches.

Mena scored the lone Golden Eagle point with a 6-2, 6-2 win over Michael Lippens in the No. 3 singles match.

In the No. 1 match, Arovin fell at the hand of #123 Alex Gornet, 6-2, 6-1; and in the No. 2 match, Esteban fell 6-1, 6-4 to #94 Albert Wagner.

In the No. 4 through 6 matches, the Cards also go the advantage. Cintas fell 6-3, 6-1, to Louisville's Simich, while Alfonzo fell to Brown, 6-0, 6-4.  Junior Othon Lima fell in the No.6 match, 6-1, 6-2 to Luis Elizondo.

The Golden Eagles return home for a five-game home-stand, starting with Belmont on Friday, and Tennessee State on Saturday. Both matches will be on the Tech Tennis Court at 12 p.m. CT.
