LOUISVILLE, Ky. -- The Tennessee Tech tennis team dropped two
non-conference matches Thursday in Louisville, falling to Toledo,
5-2, in the morning and taking a 6-1 defeat at the hands of No. 47
Louisville in the evening.
The Golden Eagles put up a pretty good fight Thursday morning
against an experienced Toledo squad, before falling 5-2. Four of
the six singles matches went the full three sets before they were
decided.
Toledo captured the doubles point with wins at Nos. 2 and 3,
forcing Oleksiy Arovin
and Alberto Esteban to walk off the No. 1 court unfinished and
leading, 4-3, over Mark Singnil and Nicky Wong. At No. 2, Stjepan
Sisko and Garrett Cona claimed a 6-1 win over Vasily Eremeev
and Artem
Tarasov, while the No. 3 contest went to Ryan Jordensen and
Boris Pak by a 6-3 score over Gonzalo Munoz and Gagan
Jain.
Tech claimed its points at Nos. 4 and 6 singles. At No. 4, Jain
outlasted Cona with 6-4, 6-4 wins in the second and third sets
after dropping the first set, 6-2. The No. 6 point went to Alvaro Cintas
with a 6-2, 6-5 win over Pak.
Three of Toledo's four singles victories went three sets. Singnil
needed three to subdue Arovin, 6-3, 3-6, 6-5 in the No. 1 position;
Wong downed Esteban, 6-2, 0-6, 6-2, at No. 3 singles, and Roberto
Meza earned a 1-6, 6-5, 6-4 win over Tarasov at No. 5. Sisko topped
Eremeev, 6-1, 6-4, at the No. 2 position.
In the nightcap, Louisville grabbed a 1-0 lead by capturing two of
the three doubles matches. Tech got a win from Eremeev and Tarasov
at the No. 2 spot, topping Alex Gornet and Chris Simich, 6-3. The
other two went to the Cards, first a 6-1 win by Van Damrongsri and
Luis Elizondo over Munoz and Jain. After Tech tied the doubles play
with their middle in the middle match, Seb Stiefelmeyer and Albert
Wagner finished off Arovin and Esteban, 6-3, in the No. 1
position.
Louisville posted wins in five straight singles matches to clinch
the match, before Arovin outlasted Stiefelmeyer in a marathon
contest at No. 1 singles to gain Tech's point. Arovin won 4-6, 6-5
(8-6), 1-0 (10-1) in the last action to finish late Thursday
night.
In the other singles play, Wagner topped Eremeev, 6-0, 6-1, at No.
2; Elizondo defeated Jain, 6-0 6-2 at No. 3; Damrongsri took a 6-0,
6-5 (7-0) decision over Tarasdov at No. 4; Simich beat Cintas, 6-0,
6-2, at No. 5; and Michael Lippens won a 6-1, 6-1 match over Munoz
at No. 6.
Tech gets a few days break from action, returning to the court on Sunday, Feb. 9, with a match at UNC Asheville at 3 p.m.
