MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. – Three members of the Tennessee Tech men's golf team saw the first collegiate actions of their careers Sunday morning, as the Golden Eagles completed the first round of play at the GolfWeek Program Challenge at True Blue Plantation.
True freshmen Cameron Yeary, Charles Seals and Dabney Dickenson all made their Golden Eagle debuts Sunday, completing the par-72, 6,982-yard course in Myrtle Beach to help their squad to a 295 overall score for day one.
While the freshmen got their first taste Division I golf, Tech's lone returning golfer with experience at True Blue picked up right where he left off at the GolfWeek Program Challenge last season. Sophomore Matthew Giles, who set the program's freshman scoring record at the same event last season with a 210 overall to finish 12th overall, wrapped up first-round play in a tie for 13th among the 80 competitors.
The Louisville, Tenn. native notched a 3-under 69 to lead the way for the Golden Eagles, tying his own single-round mark which he set over the final 18 holes of last year's GolfWeek Program Challenge.
Ranking second for Tech was one of the rookies, Cameron Yeary, who kicked off his career with a 1-over 73 to tie for 43rd overall. Sophomore Ben Huskey tossed in 76 among the scorers while another rookie, Charles Seals, notched a 77 for his first career round.
Dabney Dickenson rounded out the Tech participants for the day, posting a 78.
"Coach [Carla] Hazelwood and I are very proud with how the new guys handled themselves given it was their first round of collegiate golf," head coach Polk Brown said. "That said, I know the guys are eager and looking forward to getting back after it tomorrow and making a push up the leaderboard."
