When Tennessee Tech head coach Dewayne Alexander looked to fill the Golden Eagles’ coaching vacancy on the offensive side of the ball, he found one name hard to pass up.

With the resume Lamont Seward has, including years of experience on both the Division I Football Bowl and Football Championship subdivisions, as well as Division II and high school, Alexander brings in a coach with a high level of experience.

“We are excited to add Lamont Seward to the Golden Eagle family,” Alexander said. “Any time we have a vacancy, I always look for the qualities of character, integrity, staff fit, relatable coaching experience to the Ohio Valley Conference and FCS and someone who is a relationship builder. Lamont checks all of these boxes.

“He had previous experience working with Coach (Doug) Malone when he was the offensive coordinator at Western Carolina. When I met with Lamont and his family, I knew that was who we needed to bring in.”

Alexander continued, “My job is to get the right players and coaches on the bus and then get them in all the right seats. I have been very pleased with the coaches we brought on board in the past year – Bert Browne, Jeff Herron, Chris Grimes and Dave Johnson. They have all been great additions and with the addition of Lamont, I couldn’t be more excited about the spring football season and the future of Tech football.”

The players he has helped guide to the next level into the National Football League is also impressive with Jerrick McKinnon, J.J. Wilcox and Matt Breida playing for Seward at Georgia Southern and guiding Super Bowl champion Tyreek Hill at West Alabama.

Seward has spent the last five completed seasons at West Alabama, wearing many hats as the Tigers’ associate head coach, special teams coordinator, recruiting coordinator, pass game coordinator and wide receivers coach. He helped guide UWA to NCAA Division II playoff appearances in 2017 and 2018 with a Gulf South Conference title in 2017.

That same season also saw West Alabama win its most games in a single season as the Tigers went 10-3, 7-1 in the GSC. In 2019, UWA’s punt, kickoff and kickoff return teams led the conference, with punt and kickoffs topping the GSC in 2017.

Before his sojourn to Livingston, Ala., Seward spent a season-and-a-half at Army as the Black Knights’ slot-back coach. During his tenure at West Point, Army’s offense finished eighth in the country in rushing, averaging an astounding 296.5 yards per game. He also oversaw Army’s punt and kickoff return specialists.

His previous stop was at Georgia Southern, where he helped guide the Eagles to Southern Conference championships in 2011 and 2012, as well as Football Championship Subdivision semifinal appearances in 2010, 2011 and 2012 before GSU moved to the FBS in 2013. He spent his first two seasons there as the wide receivers coach, helping lead the Eagles to the second-best passing offense in the country in 2011, before shifting over to running backs. As he guided the RBs in the first season at Division I’s top tier, the Eagles rushed for 399.4 yards per game to claim the NCAA’s rushing title.

Seward spent two seasons at West Georgia from February 2008 to February 2010, as well as two-and-a-half years at his alma mater Western Carolina after a two-year stint as the offensive coordinator at Warren County (NC) High School.

While at WCU, he helped develop receiver Eddie Cohen to a second-team Associated Press All-America selection as he posted the Catamounts’ single-season record of 1,208 yards.

As a member of the Catamount football team from 1999 to 2003, Seward put together an impressive career, finishing with 2,972 receiving yards – third all-time at WCU and sixth in the Southern Conference. He also finished sixth in the school’s career touchdown list, caught a pass in 39 consecutive games and 43 of 45 contests played with 12 games of at least 100 yards.

Seward still holds three of WCU’s top 15 single-best receiving games. He was also the Southern Conference’s Freshman of the Year as he ranked 18th nationally with 1,000 receiving yards and 21st nationally with 90.91 receiving yards per game. He was named to the SoCon’s All-Decade Team from 1997 to 2006.

Seward and his wife, Bebe, have one son, Jax.
