Aggies’ Big First Inning Too Much for Golden Eagles

COLLEGE STATION, Texas - Tennessee Tech Golden Eagles rallied with 11 hits and scored in five different innings, but an early surge by No. 25 Texas A&M Aggies proved too much in a 23-7 loss Saturday at Blue Bell Park.

The Golden Eagles (0-2) showed resilience at the plate, highlighted by Jorsixt Jimenez's second home run in as many games, but Texas A&M (2-0) used a nine-run first inning to seize control.

After falling behind 9-0 in the opening frame, Tech began to chip away in the third. Connor Crowson and Manny Garza sparked the inning with base hits, and Jackson Rooker delivered a two-run single to left, scoring Crowson and Garza to trim the deficit to 10-2.

Tech added another run in the fourth when Landon Smelser singled and later scored on Nash Crowell's RBI double to left-center, making it 11-3.

Jimenez continued his strong start to the season in the fifth. The junior outfielder launched a solo home run to right field — his second in two games — cutting the margin to 11-4 and providing a spark in the dugout.

In the sixth, the Golden Eagles manufactured another run. Crowson singled and advanced into scoring position before Garza drove him home with an RBI single to center, pulling Tech within 19-5.

The Golden Eagles closed their scoring in the seventh. After Eddie Garza reached and a pitch hit Rooker, Smelser lined an RBI single to score Garza. Jimenez then added a sacrifice fly to bring home Rooker, capping Tech's seven-run effort.

Crowson and Manny Garza each had two hits to pace the 11-hit attack, while Smelser added two hits and an RBI. Jimenez finished with two RBIs.

Texas A&M answered nearly every Tech push, plating runs in five of its six at-bats, including an eight-run fifth and a four-run sixth to put the game out of reach.

TTU finished with seven runs on 11 hits, including multi-hit games from Smelser (2-5, RBI), Crowson (2-4, R), M. Garza (2-3, R, RBI), E. Garza (2-4). The Golden Eagles had five different players drive in a run, with Jimenez bringing in two while hitting his second home run of the season.
